Real Estate HONORroll

Four years ago I knew next to nothing about real estate.

I like to think I’ve learned a few things since then (still have much to learn), and that is in large part due to a dozen or so real estate blogs I’ve been following. Instead of simply relegating them to a blogroll, I wanted to first acknowledge each of them here. Watch for a separate post devoted to Chicago real estate blogs.

    Michael,
I took a quick look at your new site and your blog. You have some interesting ideas. I’m a realtor and thinking about signing up, but probably going to sit on the sidelines and watch for a little while. I know you’ve probably spent a lot of time figuring out how to set up your site, but I am not comfortable with a few things – I think it is a little more complicated for the consumer than it needs to be. This is probably because in my prior life I was heavily involved in databases and front-end user interfaces for same. I am hoping that you’ll be fine-tuning the interface – please don’t be offended, I’m sure you’ve already put a ton of work into it!!!

Some food for thought….what if prospective client will be both a buyer and a seller and wants an agent that they can work with for both transactions? I provide different package (in your terminology) for that type of client than someone that is only going to sell or only going to buy.
Is there a limit on the number of neighborhoods/suburbs where I can list my services/show up in consumer searches – I would want to be in as many as possible to maximize my exposure – is there a limit? The agents that I’ve seen listed so far don’t appear to have filled out all of the information that they could’ve or should’ve. Why is that the case?

By the way, feel free to check out my blog: http://www.ChicagoNOrthShore.typepad.com

Good luck with your new site!

  3. Thanks for your comments, Nancy. I crave the feedback, and take no offense whatsoever to constructive criticism!

As for a complicated interface, could you be more specific? It is admittedly simple right now, and will certainly evolve over time, but I’d certainly welcome comments on what I can do to improve it.

Your suggestion about catering to consumers that want to use the same agent for a sale and purchase is excellent, and on the “drawing board” with many others. As it stands, an agent can include information in the appropriate text field regarding the benefits of using him or her for a buy and sale, but expressly incorporating your suggestion into the package/search process would probably be even more useful for consumers. Thank you!

There is no limit on the number of neighborhoods/suburbs where you can list your services/show up in consumer searches, although agents should of course only include those locations that they presently serve/are willing to serve. The site cannot be used to refer consumers to other agents.

As for why some agents have not yet fully utilized every package field, I think there are probably many explanations. I expect the “meaningful participation” level to change when we start actively marketing the site online and offline. It should also increase as I begin to (privately) provide subscribing agents with feedback from consumers as to what they like/don’t like/want to see. Of course the agent(s) that more fully exploit the site are the ones that are going to stand out most from the competition and attract prospective buyers/sellers.

Anything else that you are uncomfortable with that you care to share Nancy?

    Thanks again for the feedback!

    -Michael
